Fantastic Four Vs. Super-Skrull

This is a commission I got through my association with John Byrne from Greg Goldstein at IDW back in August 2012. Mr Byrne doesn't care for colorholds (tinting the lineart), so it made for an interesting gig. This is the first time it's being seen in public.

Desperately seeking

They say God loves a trier, so he really must have a warm spot in his heart for myself and Dirk Manning. Now I'm back to the Micks after a prolonged absence and we're both back to Farseeker, now titled FARSEEKERS. Dirk went to C2E2 to do his magic and I put this piece together to gussy up the pitch. How far will things go this time around? Too early to say, but we're very hopeful indeed. In any case, I hope to be bringing the rest of our first story arc later this year, by hook or by crook.

It's all in the eye

It finally looks like I'm slithering out from under the mountain of crap that's buried me all summer- hurrah!

I had Big Trouble in Little China on while working this week- it gave me a pang of nostalgia and an idea for this morning's sketch. I've played D&D for 27 years and always loved the sheer lunatic weirdness of the Beholder, a megalomaniac floating set of eyes that shoot magic rays and stuff- just what a twelve year old loves to see.

Morrigan

Here's my wee contribution: a quick color sketch of the Irish Battle Goddess, The Morrigan. Like all the strong women in Irish Myth, she's sharp, uses her amorous affections as weapons, and can hold a grudge.

Not someone to offend before a fight, then.

It's full of stars!

I've had this one in my head since forever- nice to finally get it out. I used to have the Kirby adaptation as a child- made no sense to me at the time, but still remember being arrested by the imagery.

Blue Note Bebop

I entirely missed out on the TMNT cartoon, though the comics were fun. For something so oddly subversive and underground at the time, it was weird to see them get turned into wholesome Saturday morning cartoon fare. My doodle was of Bebop, the warthog Mutant (apparently he was created for the show, which was a bit short on other mutants). He was typical inoffensive cartoon stuff: closer to Miss Piggy then the real thing. I had precisely zero time to give to this- wish I had more time to hammer this into a decent idea, but there you go.

Skeksis

Jim Henson's Fantasy Movies are just great, and I have special spot for The Dark Crystal and it's evil Gonzos: the Skeksis. Like all great kids movies, they weren't afraid to take them to some really dark places- he's been missed.

Cyclops

I love the Cyclops from The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, but my favorite Sinbad was John Philip Law from The Golden Voyage, so it seemed to be a good idea for them to finally get acquainted.

Just got back in, so knocked out this color sketch of Brian Cowen in an early role.

Jedi is my least favorite of the original trilogy- the aliens were great, but chopping wookies in half in an effort to sell plush fecking ewoks was NOT cool.

Akira

More so then anything else, it's the image of the destruction of Tokyo at the start of the story that sticks with me- that expanding sphere was so simple and yet so damn terrifying- so of course it has to be the signature of my doodle of Akira reconstituting himself.

Remembering the first Back to the Future, I always smiled at Marty's Dad George- the whole movie from his point of view has the quality of one of those Doris Day/Rock Hudson farces.

The Doctor is Sin

I have an old 2000AD Annual somewhere that features this character (I think by Pat Mills). The story had a great Devil Rides Out kind of vibe, which made an impression. He turned up once more in the '90s, but Doctor Sin remains one of the great untapped characters of the 2000AD canon.
