Dec here. Nick's away Bot-ing it up at Bot-Con in the States this weekend, so he asked me to post this weeks image for him. It's a Punisher sketch he did for one Neil Delaney at the last Dublin con.

30 Rock

I only realised after I finished this that most people won't have a clue what it's based on. Oh well. Anyway this is some of the cast of 30 Rock, which is probably my favouite comedy since the Simpsons went crap and Fututama got cancelled. Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan. Drawn with Painter on the Cintiq. 

Fear Part III, the return of Freddie

Yep, 3rd in a line of pics for this weekends 2D festival. Never had drawn slave leia before so this was fun. Except for the chains, man I hate drawing chains!

FEAR

This is my piece for 2D that Mooney mentioned yesterday. I went a completely different (and obvious) direction and depicted a common staple of 'scary' characters; the Hooded Figure. There's lots of them; the Sith in Star Wars, the Wraiths in Lord of the Rings, Death itself, you name it. The Hooded Figure a common image used to represent something to fear, so that's what i drew.

Went reeeeaaaallllly messy with this, and used more greywash than usual. Was fun to do.

2D Or Not 2D

Ahoy-hoy.
A handful of us Micks are making an appearance at the Northern Ireland con, or 2D as it's known, in a couple of weeks. The con is producing its own comic this year and asked for contributions from the attending pros on the subject of 'Fear'.

"What Is The Secret Of Your Power...?"

No heroics this week in the form of trying to take on the planet's foremost comic icon with substandard art equipment at the 11th hour. Instead, I took a gentle stab at a character no one really gives a nun's chuff about. So blank is this filly's slate in my mind, that I'm at a loss for pithiness. Nostalgia, you form no intersection betwixt the Venn Diagram of Diana Prince and myself. In fact, I wish I'd drawn Rainbow Brite.

Shaven Kraven

(apologies for the blog title)

Anyhue, not sure exactly why, but I got a hankering to draw me some Kraven the Hunter (who's name may be spelt Kravan, and, if I'd an ounce of human decency I'd spend it on checking the spelling - hang it, I checked, it's right).

Drawn in pencil with markers and brush (I started inking in brush, bought some pens and decided to finish it in marker - not my best decision ever, but still...)



ALSO: Bonus sketch-a-roonie, This week (today if you subscribe, wednesday if you buy in the newsagents) is the start of the three part "It Came From Bea Arthur Block" a goofie three part Judge Dredd written by Gordon Rennie and drawn by yours truly, to celebrate, I'll send someone a cool little sketch if they can use the attached wig image in some sort of comedy manner that makes me laugh the most. Being green

Here's another editorial style illustration I did a while back, again using Painter on the Cintiq. This one was drawn straight to colour using the pen tools, rather than being inked in black and white and then coloured like last weeks post. Next week I'll be drawing an original piece rather than just recycling an old sketch. Mainly because I've run out of old sketches. 

D'other Micks Characters

So seeing Decs Picard sketch there a while back kind of wheted my appitite for having a lash at a character that each of the Micks have drawn before so I've stuck them together. Plus its always fun to draw Patrick Stewart even if it aint a great likeness (He'll always be Xavier to me too) Although saying that Im just back from Star Trek and really enjoyed it.
Whats funny about this is that after finishing it I realise that I drew Mickey in the way I used hate seeing the Turtles drawn as a kid, i.e. No Pupils, Big teeth and spots on his skin. I used even go as far as marking in the pupils on the action figures I had!

HENCHMEN

I meant to do a lot more work on this piece and actually colour it up, but got stuck for time this week, so just ended up lashing it out. For those who don't know, these are 2 characters from the absolutely brilliant Venture Brothers cartoon.

I'm itching to do more Venture Brothers drawings, but i'll probably end up doing them on my own blog.

High Plains Grifter

Ah, the nineties.
Wildcats was the first one of the first books I collected religiously(along with Savage Dragon) when Image was formed. I loved those books, with the 'storyline' kept at a healthy arm's length, and Jim Lee (followed ably by Travis Charest) blowing my tiny little mind.
Grifter to this day is the character I'd most like to work on believe it or not. When Alan Moore was writing the characters they were unbelievably good.

Look, it's clearly not a fucking bird or a plane, you GOBSHITE.

What happens when you forget to do a Micks' sketch and are saddled with some wasting markers, no decent old sketches to hand, and a head full of impossible dreams? Um, this.



Ah well, all about the process, baby. I'm pressed for time as I pencil and ink the Transformers story wot I wrote for IDW. (Was gonna post a TF doodle, but I refuse to have them round here. It's like mixing two separate groups of friends and trying to keep everyone happy. Awful time, awful...)So maybe next week I'll have at least a link to my own forgotten blog with some previews for that. In the mean time, sniff my Vs.

Fatty-fat-fat-fat

Here's a sketch of nobody in particular (although we can pretend it's Foggy Nelson or something  to keep the comic character vibe going). I was trying to inject some caricature into my drawings of faces, something I've always loved about artists like Parlov and Immonen. This was done with Painter on a Cintiq. 

Ka Dargo

Day 74 in the big brother house and still no one has been voted off. I finished Farscape today so heres Big D. Gonna have a nice bit of time for next weeks piece now so I plan on doing something Dec suggested and drawing one of every character that all the other lads have drawn in their books

SCOTT PILGRIM

Nearly forgot about my Micks drawing this week; did this late last night in about 15 mins. Tried mixing it up a bit this week by drawing a character that no one (myself included) would have guessed i'd draw. I recently read all the Scott Pilgim books to date and really enjoyed them; they have a bit of everything in them; romance, action, comedy and lots and lots of music and videogame references. What's not to like? Scott Pilgrim is normally drawn in a very stylized manner, so i had to figure out my own take on how to draw him.

I laugh when I think just how cool I used to think this character was... still like him a lot though.
Just a quick one this time, busy busy. Eleventh week... mad.

Hate The Spider, Love The Man.

The early Roche catches a few minutes to curl off the Spider-Man. Not a terribly challenging effort from me this week - as you can see - but I'm back up to my tidemark in work again, so felt like squirting out some pure fun. Maybe next week, I'll have another of my famed and geometric "Nickleby's Wurld of Gurls."

Waaay back at the start of my pro comics career, when Warhammer Monthly was still a comic, I was pitching to try and draw some Orcs. The editor (Christian Dunne) was a top bloke, but found it hysterical that I didn't know the difference between Orc and Ork (to this day I still don't know the difference, which shows you: there's ALWAYS a bigger nerd...) Anyhue, here's one of the pitch sketches.

My webcomic is back again

Glum Conan

I hadn't intended this to be a Micks sketch (or even a picture of Conan when I started) but I've been messing about with a demo version of Manga Studio and this was one of the results. It's by far the best computer drawing program I've used, tailor made for comic book artists. Although because it's a demo it won't let you save pictures, so this is from a screen capture. Hence the slightly crappy quality. 

The Symptoms

Heres a piece I did for Dave Hendrick based on some characters hes currently writing about. I reckon I'm about one third of a way towards some sort of look that I have in my head that kind of mixes some sort of Grindhouse grunge with ripped paper and sellotape. Theres a good chance you'll see more of these characters popping up soon so stay tuned.
P.S. Farscape Strange Detractors issue 2 is out today. Prob not out until friday in Europe because of the bank holiday

CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD

I'm a huge STAR TREK fan. Really looking forward to this new movie, so i wanted to do a Trek drawing this week. Thing is, i'm not a huge fan of the original series as i grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation (or ST:TNG). As sad as it sounds, Captain Picard raised me.

I originally was going to do a really loose and messy drawing for this (was gonna draw him as Locutus; his Borg persona). As i worked on it though, i pushed the composition and design more, and my actual drawing ended up being a lot cleaner than it has been of late. Guess i just didn't have the balls to go mad with it and played it safe. Still happy with it though. I have the original thumbnail over on my blog if you want a better idea of what i was originally going for.

The Best There Is At What He Does...

...which is apparently vigorous self-pleasure.
I spent a good 2 or 3 hours drawing away on this last thursday in anticipation of the wolvie movie. I was pretty happy with it, was thinking along the lines of showing the feral reaction to that sweet familiar pain as Logan's claws slice through his hands once more.
Then Jac came home from work and rather worriedly asked me what the hell I was drawing before bursting out laughing.
Turns out it was Wolverine tearing the lad off himself.
NSFW, I guess...

PS- this actually originally had blood flying from the back of his fist where the claws emerge. I removed it.

Truly Outrageous

Never seen an episode of Jem and The Holograms, but it being kids' TV week here in the Micklair, plus my reliance on 80s pop to get me through my day edged me toward drawing this tidy piece of electroskirt. Should've eased off the angles possibly, but pointy ladies are SO 1986, right? I love the fact that Jem is dressed in the style of all the current batch of pop-tartlets too. I'm so dated, I'm edgy.

Battle of the Planets

Kids TV eh? Well, since most of the kid tv in my day was made up of monochrome serial adventures (champion the wonder horse, zorro, king of the rocket men, flash gordon, etc) I've been feeling pretty old and left out. The one I remembered we had Battle Of The Planets. With it's gender Indeterminate villain (actually him/her and Tripitaka from Monkey - a male character played by a girl - confused the hell out of me as a youngster).
Anyhue here's a drawing (well photo of a drawing as I can't get near my scanner - though I'll update it when I do) of the hero Mark.
