The Bigger Fella by Stephen Thompson

I had a hankering to do some real inking last night, so I thought a Hulk/forest scene would be a nice way to scratch that itch. This is 95% brush with a little bit of dip-pen and felt tip. I went with his Ultimates hairdo 'cause it makes him look more like a doofus.

The Big Fella

Well, actually its not him. Its just some dude from that era. Finally read preacher, loved the scene where they kicked him in the balls

THANOS

I've taken some pre-order sketch requests for the upcoming NYCC. It's one way of guaranteeing that I get some sketches done no matter how busy i'll be at the con. This is the first of them; THANOS.

What Shadows Lurk In The Hearts Of Moon...

These are the pencils for a piece I'm doing as part of an art swap at the NYC con with fellow Angel-alum and all-round good egg Nick Runge. If ya want anything changed, ye better pipe up now Nick, cos I'll be inking this bad-boy up during the week.

INCOMPETENCE UPDATE: You may have noticed that the blog header is still proudly heralding 'Thunderbolts Week'. This is because I was the one who changed it from the normal header without saving a copy of the original first, and now don't know how to change it back. Will, tell me you have a copy of the original?

Las Vagueness

Oy-vey. One of them 'Tied-for-Time, Cryptic Cropped' Mickpics this week, Micklickers. A snatch of something from my forthcoming project, one I'm very looking forward to sinking my teeth into.

Mice Templar

I've had some peripheral involvement with Mice Templar from Image, but I've always wanted to do a little illustration of Cassius, one of the pivotal characters. Volume 2.2 came out this week, and continues a trend of handsome hardbacks. Check them out.

Mister Amperduke

Here's a headshot of the redesigned Mister Amperduke for the forthcoming Graphic Novel 'Tourist Trade'. I wanted to make him more realistic for the new book.

Chiggedy check it before you wreck it, DOUBLE DOSE of Spazzmoid today. I just can't help myself.

Dredd Panel by Stephen Thompson

Here's another panel from my never-finished Dredd sample. I quite liked how this one turned out, with Dredd reflected in the robot's faceplate while he pleads for his life.

LIFE DRAWING

Argh! Stuck for time with finishing Thunderbolts and whatnot. So, here's a little something from my life drawing sketchbook (which has been gathering a lot of dust i'm afraid to admit). Drew this looser than normal. Wouldn't mind trying this out a bit more.

Spidey Noggin

Sorry about the rushed sketch this week, seriously snowed-under workwise. This was a head sketch done on the fly for a kid at 2D con this year.

Man Thing

There's a lot to be said for starting a picture after a 24-hour stretch of work and a belly full of enthusiasm. I knocked this out in about an hour and a half (I know, because I went though almost two episodes of Maury). Best fun I've had in weeks.
I may have mentioned this before, but my first serious exposure to American Comics was Dr Strange Vs. his Warthog- headed counterpart, and a bumper omnibus of Man-Thing vs. ghost Pirates. Stephen Strange was cool enough, but Man thing was just fascinating: a mindless muck monster who seemed incapable of staying out of the strangest kinds of trouble. It was it's rubbery, boneless, gelatinous quality and that fear-induced corrosive touch that sold me, though.

Thunderbolts ATTACK!

What a great book for Dec to debut on. The characters are all so different and visually strong that it's perfect for him to showcase his talent.

I originally wanted to do just Skull & Bones but I went with an action shot instead. Does Swamp Thing even kill people? I thought he was like Snuffaluffagus, just shambling around sniffing flowers. I squeezed Ghost into the background but I have no idea what her powers are so she's electrocuting a ninja. I'll colour it for next week.

Probably the only gripe I have with the comic is you automatically think of The Turtles when you see the team in the sewers and then the ninja clan are called The Hand instead of The Foot.

New page on my webcomic right now

Ghost by Stephen Thompson

So our week of Declan worship continues with Ghost from the Thunderbolts. A character I know nothing about, but I like his creepy B.P.R.D. look. I broke out the old school brushes and nibs to draw this one and the old school Photoshop CS to colour it. Make sure you go meet Declan tomorrow at Forbidden Planet in Dublin where you can see him in all his glory. I know I will.

Crossbones

Well this one goes down as a colour experiment that didnt really work. I had something completely different in mind, but Ive just moved back to New York so I didnt have time to fully realise it. Ah well. Cool character though, I have a feeling well be seeing a lot more of him. TB is out today wohoo, Ill be picking it up today in Midtown comics

THUNDERBOLTS: SHADOWLAND

As ye all know by now, my debut Marvel work, Thunderbolts #148 is out this Weds (Stateside)/Thurs (UK/Eire). I wasn't sure what to draw for this theme week, but I noticed Marvel have done a lot of covers with the looming Daredevil figure incorporated in their Shadowland line. So, since my T-Bolts issues are part of the Shadowland crossover, i thought I'd try my hand at a Thunderbolts one. A kind of a 'what if I got to draw a cover' type thing.

Anyway, here it is.

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who has been really encouraging about the upcoming T-Bolts issues, i really appreciate it, and to the fellow Micks for knocking something together for the blog this week. You guys are okay. Well, kinda.

Moonstone by Stephen Mooney

Here we go with another Theme Week, this time it's the turn of Declan Shalvey's stint on Marvel's Thunderbolts book, the first issue of which is in stores this wednesday(U.S.) or Thursday(mother country). Buy several!

I was assigned the good lady Moonstone(hint's in the name I guess) to draw, and that suited me fine as much like Barry White,  I love the sexy slither of a lady snake. Her costume is a tad generic to say the least, seemingly consisting of a white and gold body-stocking and mask. So I punched up the gold parts a bit, and went for a nice dramatic angle to try and make the shot a shade more interesting looking.
That, and boobs, obviously.

The pencils and inks for this piece can be seen over on the Moonblog here, if you interested in that sort of thing...

Sweet Dreams

Ah, Morpheus. The Gateway Drug I used to switch my missus onto comics. Used to draw this posy sod all the time to impress 'er. Now I don't care. As evidenced by the Cintiq offering.

Under the Influence

Firstly, apologies for my general tardiness this month- it's been a rough one. Not a lot of time to spare, so I'm taking a leaf from PJ and spreading this wee meme he contracted .
It was fun to peel open the skull and rummage about, reconsidering your influences and where the fit in your head in terms of impact.

Who dat? by Bob Byrne

It just occurred to me that this character might be a little obscure. I guarantee Dec doesn't know who he is. But for me, my little bro and a few friends he was the bomb.

Spazzmoid gets another page added to it today too

Hal

This is part of another abandoned sample from a few years ago. I've actually managed to recycle this sketch into an actual job I'm doing for DC at the moment. It's a a different character so I just kept the pose and general proportions.

Colouring

Here are two pics I did purely for colouring practice. After seeing Cover Run by Adam Hughes I was mad to try out some of the techniques used in it

TASKMASTER vs SWARM

Another suggestion from when I asked on Twitter. Definitely one of the weirdest, but oddly specific, requests I've gotten.

Supergirl

Bit of a half-assed one this week(I'll finish it up properly for a future post. I've just noticed that the wind is blowing her hair up, while pressing her cape down. I'm an idiot.)as I spent most of my time on my piece for next week. The theme then will be 'Thunderbolts', as Dec Shalvey's first issue of said fine periodical 'drops'.

Tune in then, sports-fans.

Getting Wrecked on My Birthday

Breaking my 'No Robots' rule again this week because I've got a book to sell. The TPB of 'Last Stand of The Wreckers' is out in comic shops, and will be in proper bookshops next week. (On Friday we reached the dizzying heights of number 55 in the Amazon Books>Comics>Graphic Novels chart! Not many can say that, right?

Anyway, the TPB collects the five issues of the critically-acclaimed Transformers series written by myself and James Roberts, and it is stuffed with more goodies than your mam on my birthday. (Which is today, so clear the decks) There's a ten-page prose story written by James called 'Bullets' which is essentially Wreckers #0, two new character prodiles writted and drawed by me, a '25 Things You Didn't Know About Wreckers', an ace pin-up by colourist Josh Burcham and some sketchy goodness from Josh and I to boot. We're really proud of this one, chaps, and can say with confidence that even non-TF fans will find this an accesible and fun read. But then, I would say that.

Here's a shot of out hunky-but-conflicted hero, Springer. Done for Forbidden Planet online, so there'll be a chance for YOU to win the original in the near future. I'll keep you updated.

So by the TPB of 'Last Stand opf The Wrecker' the sooner-the-quicker as your gift to me. And maybe I won't fill your mam with my goodies.

(Big thanks to Aimee, aka Ladywreck for the amazing sig!)

Mr Sir by Bob Byrne

I was tempted to post more 2000AD panels but here are some sketches for a new series of kid's books I'm working on. I've set myself the challenge to write, design, draw and publish to ipad within a month. I wrote the story on Sunday and diddled these up yesterday.

I'm a gig fan of Rodney Greenblat, the dude that designed Parappa the Rappa so I'm ripping him off basically.

Check our some fat sweaty tramp sticking her Monster Munch flavoured tongue down my necky neck on Spazzmoid

Unfinished Dredd by Stephen Thompson

Here's a page from a Dredd sample I never quite got around to finishing from a few years ago. I think drawing the Hall of Justice just drained all my enthusiasm. I do quite like the hologram of the baby though.
