Couple of reasons I chose this guy to draw this week, the main being that I've just gotten my hands on the phenomonal new 'Rocketeer: The Complete Collection' from the boys over at IDW. It's a stunning book collecting all of the beautifully illustrated strips by the late, great Dave Stevens. Amazing tales of pulpy goodness featuring dollops of derring-do, gorgeous dames and nefarious Commie-Nazis. Here's a link to IDW Editor-in-Chief, Chris 'I'll sleep when I'm dead' Ryall's blog where he gives a great and thorough lowdown on the book: clicky.
Reason the second:
Dec's just joined a second art collective, the Comic Twarts(don't ask). These guys are horribly-talented feckers, and the stuff they post is of a uniformly high standard. This past week, the Twart guys all tackled a Rocketeer piece, check 'em out here.
I wanted to try my hand at a piece featuring this guy, since Dec basically said that these Twart boyos were all far better artists than us Micks(don't have to tell it like it is, Dec), and it riled my blood and got me feeling all competitive-like.
You should get them to post yours on Twarts, easily beats most of the other renditions.
Ah, dunno bout that man, some of those guys are REAL artists.
Not Shalvey though.
fuck that, easily makes it to the top three, with Dec's and Francesco Francavilla's.
Great job mooney, this one is coloured really well. Its very very slick
yeah I like this one alright. would look good on a t-shirt!
This is great honey! You kick Twass! Dec - stop sucking up to your new friends... :P
Thanks guys! I'm happy with it alright, but don't think it holds a candle to the likes of Tom Fowler's piece.
Jac; i'll suck as hard and as long as i like! Yes, you heard me right.
I love how hilariously similar our Rocketeers turned out, but i honestly think yours is much better. Love the tones.
(plus; yeah; Fowler kicked all our asses)
Yeah I like how you basically just did Shalvey's Rocketeer but drew it better. Checkmate sir.
Actually Thomps, Mooney drew his before i drew mine. We'd both finished ours separately then found out they were nearly the same afterwards. What a world.
Aw, I thought Mooney was riffing on your piece. Like when he used to use Sharpie markers to 'fix' bits of Travis Charest comics that he didn't like.
Did Thompson just compare Dec to Charest?
"Fix" Charest's work?? No way
I think he did Jackie. Who am i to argue with him...?
Damn, I did didn't I? My apologies to The Great Man himself. And to Travis.
Man, you've really gotta stop telling people that Thompson.
And that nose needed fixing and you 'knows' it.
Heh, always on.
for that dodgy joke you're having leftovers for dinner!
This is troublingly good. Troublingly good.
